Rome - Eighty-two artists from around the world,
32 of them young people born after 1975 and less than 32
female presence. Four artists participating in the
Director Bice Curiger asked to create "parapadiglioni",
architectural structures and sculptures arranged in the
Giardini and the Arsenale, built to house the work of
other artists. 87 national pavilions, a record number
for the Art Biennale (was 77 in 2009). The nations will
be present for the first time, Andorra, Saudi Arabia,
Bangladesh, Haiti. While others, will participate this
year after a long absence: India (1982), Congo (1968),
Iraq (1990), Zimbabwe (1990), South Africa (1995), Costa
Rica (1993, then with IILA), Cuba (1995, then with
IILA). More than 40 side events will be offered by
international organizations and institutions, which will
organize their exhibitions and their initiatives in
various places in the city during the occasion.
Many known names among the participating artists: Franz
West, James Turrell, by Rosemarie Trockel to Sigmar
Polke, and even Philippe Parreno, Peter Fischli & David
Weiss, Pipilotti Rist, Cindy Sherman to name a few.
While among the younger, I would like to emphasize the
presence of those who follow with more personal
attention as Oscar Tuazon, Latifa Echakhch, Nick Relph,
Mohamed Bourouissa. Among the national pavilions, the
presence of Allora and Calzadilla this year to represent
the United States of America. Jennifer Allora and
Guillermo Calzadilla are young artists cha mix of
performances, installations, music, film and sculpture
to create works of great impact.
